Rocky Glen on Mom's Bucket List

My mom, pictured above with my husband, had mentioned for awhile that she wanted to hike to Rocky Glen. Rocky Glen is a little canyon in the bluffs around West Peoria. It is a mini Starved Rock. Above, mom and John are getting ready to start our hike.

Above is the map at the trailhead. It's not a very long hike, but it is mainly uphill.

And here we go!

We set out on a beautiful, late October day with the temperature hitting 80.

The entrance to Rocky Glen is located on Creek Road, where there is a parking lot. The Friends of Rocky Glen worked hard to make this accessible trail to this natural treasure. Just a bit into the hike, we turned around to see a train going down the tracks that cross Farmington Road.

Benches are conveniently located at a few places along the trail.

I think I'll take a break too!

We appreciated the signs.

So here we are going downhill, but it was mainly uphill to the canyon.

Mom and John are pictured above the canyon. I didn't get any good photos of the canyon because of the foliage and also because I didn't want any of us to get too close to the edge. You can't tell it from these photos but my mom is 85! 

But she killed it!

We did it! Thankful we had such a beautiful day for this hike! We will be back!

Happy 89th Birthday Dad!

  My dad turned 89 on September 24, 2020. We had a socially-distant, masked party at their home. It was a beautiful evening.  I was in charge of the food, and we got carryout from Biaggi's. All were interested in the victuals.   So much so that the non-human had to be banished to the sunroom. Hard to convey in words how much my dad means to me and all of us. I think about all the tennis balls he patiently hit to us, the calm, wise words when we screwed up, the rides at any time of the day or night when we were in need, all the love. There's no way to pay him back. We were very glad to be able to celebrate with him.  It's not every day that you turn 89! Thanks so much Dad! We love you!

Move In Day at Bradley University

Who's the student? It was move in day at Bradley University in Peoria this weekend, and like universities around the country, there were new rules and regs this year to keep people safe. Above my sister Theresa helps move in her daughter Lauren, who is living in Williams Hall, the dorm Theresa stayed in 30 plus years ago. Masks, social distancing, etc. are the new normal for now. The college age cohort doesn't seem to be too compliant with the rules, but we hope they will get with the program so that they can stay healthy and stay in school.  Above are Lauren and her brother Will and cousin Luke as they move some of her things into the dorm. Here are the cute stickers on Lauren and her roommate Melody's door. The boys situate the refrig as Theresa looks on. The cinderblock room hasn't changed much since Theresa was a coed here. First Day of School

Luke's first day of school as a senior  Covid 19 has forced us to get used to a lot of ambiguity. As a wise person I know said, "Being nimble is important." No where is this more true than with how schools are adapting to the pandemic. It is almost as if decisions can only be made for a day or a week at a time. For now, St. Mark's and the other Catholic schools are giving families the choice of having their children educated in school or at home online. A socially distanced classroom at St. Mark's Today was the first day of school at St. Mark's, where I serve as the development director and at Peoria Notre Dame, where our son Luke is beginning his senior year.  The schools have done tons of work over the summer preparing the school and protocols to be able to have students and staff in the building together, while keeping them as safe as possible.
